YEREVAN, June 9 – Wizz Air has officially launched new direct flights connecting Yerevan with London and Rhodes, significantly expanding Armenia’s air travel options. The inaugural London-Yerevan flight landed at Zvartnots International Airport on June 8, marking the end of a 14-year hiatus in direct air communication between the capitals of Armenia and the United Kingdom.

Resumption of Yerevan-London Route After 14 Years

The new route connects London’s Luton Airport with Yerevan’s Zvartnots International Airport. Flights will operate twice a week, every Monday and Friday. The one-way ticket price starts from 50 euros, and the flight duration is slightly over 5 hours.

This event concludes a long break in direct flights between the two capitals, which began in October 2012 after British airline BMI ceased its operations. The re-establishment of this route is expected to boost tourism and business ties between Armenia and the UK.

Expansion to Greece with Yerevan-Rhodes Flights

In addition to the British route, Wizz Air has also expanded its flight network to Greece. According to Zvartnots Airport, the airline launched direct flights from Yerevan to Rhodes on June 7. Flights to the Greek island and back will also operate twice a week, every Thursday and Sunday.

These new routes are anticipated to provide more convenient travel options for Armenian citizens and visitors, fostering greater connectivity with European destinations. The expansion reflects Wizz Air’s growing presence in the Armenian market and its commitment to offering affordable travel.

Impact on Armenian Tourism and Economy

The introduction of these direct flights is expected to have a positive impact on Armenia’s tourism sector, making the country more accessible to travelers from the UK and Greece. Increased tourist arrivals could lead to economic growth, job creation, and further development of the hospitality industry.

Local businesses, particularly those in the travel and tourism sectors, are likely to benefit from the enhanced connectivity. The improved accessibility could also attract more foreign investments and facilitate international trade.

Wizz Air’s Growing Presence in Armenia

Wizz Air has been steadily expanding its operations in Armenia, introducing several new routes over the past few years. The airline’s strategy focuses on offering low-cost travel options, which has made it a popular choice among passengers. The addition of London and Rhodes to its network from Yerevan further solidifies its position as a key player in the Armenian aviation market.

The airline’s commitment to the region is evident in its continuous efforts to enhance connectivity and provide diverse travel opportunities for passengers. Wizz Air’s expansion is part of a broader trend of increasing air traffic and route development at Zvartnots International Airport.

Industry experts believe that the new routes will not only benefit leisure travelers but also contribute to strengthening cultural and economic exchanges between Armenia and the respective European countries.
