Yerevan, June 13 – The city of Yerevan is preparing to implement new restrictions on private passenger vehicles to combat severe traffic congestion. This initiative was announced by Mayor Tigran Avinyan on June 12 during a permanent parliamentary committee meeting, where he presented a report on the city’s ongoing efforts.
Economic Growth Fuels Traffic Woes
According to Mayor Avinyan, the primary cause of the city’s traffic problems is its robust economic growth, which has led to a significant increase in the number of vehicles on the road, CivilNet reports. He emphasized that even with continuous expansion of public transport, its effectiveness is hampered without corresponding restrictions on private cars.
“No matter how much we increase public transport in Yerevan, which we have been doing consistently over the years, public transport cannot operate according to its schedule if we do not have restrictions for passenger cars,” Avinyan stated.
