YEREVAN, October 13 – The Yerevan City Council, during its session on Tuesday, made a decision to rename two streets in the capital. Nor Aresh 3rd Street will be named after the renowned Armenian poet Metakse, while Frunze Street will be renamed Yervanduni Street.
Nor Aresh 3rd Street to Become Metakse Street
Nor Aresh 3rd Street, located in the Erebuni administrative district, starting from the Artashat canal, running parallel to Rostovyan Street, and extending to Azatamartikner Street, will henceforth bear the name of Metakse (1926-2014), an Armenian poetess, writer, translator, and public figure.
The initiative to rename the street was put forward by Metakse’s daughter, Lilit Aghagyulyan. The justification for the decision highlights Metakse’s significant contributions to Armenian literature, the popularization of Armenian poetry, as well as her patriotic and charitable activities.
Frunze Street to be Renamed Yervanduni Street
Frunze Street, situated in the Shengavit administrative district, commencing from Garegin Nzhdeh Street and reaching Bagratunyats Street, will be renamed in honor of the ancient Armenian royal dynasty, the Yervandunis.
According to the rationale behind the decision, the renaming aims to more comprehensively reflect the historical heritage of the Armenian people within Yerevan’s toponymic system. The justification also notes that since the street begins from Bagratunyats Street and runs parallel to Arshakunyats Avenue, renaming it after the Yervandunis will create a historically and spatially interconnected toponymic ensemble in that area, featuring the names of Yervanduni, Arshakuni, and Bagratuni dynasties.
Mikhail Frunze was a Soviet political and military leader, and a commander of the Red Army. He participated in the revolutionary movement of 1905-1907 and later held senior military leadership positions in the Soviet Union.
