Yerevan, April 16 – During a question-and-answer session in the National Assembly on Wednesday, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan discussed the new opportunities for Armenian citizens, particularly focusing on affordable air travel. He specifically mentioned flights from Gyumri to Larnaca, Cyprus.

Pashinyan: Gyumri-Larnaca Tickets for 2 Euros

Prime Minister Pashinyan stated that one-way tickets from Gyumri to Larnaca are available for as low as 2 euros, which is approximately 900 drams. He emphasized that this affordability makes international travel accessible even for pensioners, who could potentially purchase five round-trip tickets with their increased pensions.

“For Sunday, there is a ticket to Larnaca for 2 euros, meaning a one-way air ticket from Gyumri to Larnaca is 900 drams. A pensioner can buy five round-trip tickets with their increased pension,” Pashinyan said, highlighting the opportunities created.

He then humorously added, “Maybe it has already become more expensive… we advertised it, the price went up – 2.19 euros,” acknowledging the potential for price fluctuations.

Connecting Armenia to the World

This statement underscores the government’s efforts to enhance connectivity and make international travel more accessible for Armenian citizens. The availability of such low-cost flights from Gyumri, a city in the Shirak Province, aims to boost tourism and economic activity in the region.

The Prime Minister’s remarks were made in the context of broader discussions on increasing opportunities and improving the quality of life for the population. Affordable travel options can significantly impact various sectors, including tourism, trade, and cultural exchange.

Impact on Local Economy and Tourism

The accessibility of flights from Gyumri is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy of Shirak Province. Increased passenger traffic can lead to growth in local businesses, including hospitality, transportation, and retail sectors. It also positions Gyumri as a more prominent hub for international travel within Armenia.

The focus on affordable travel aligns with global trends of budget airlines making air travel more democratic. For Armenia, a landlocked country, such initiatives are crucial for strengthening ties with the international community and fostering economic development.

The Prime Minister’s comments also implicitly highlight the potential for increased tourism to Armenia, as affordable outbound flights can often stimulate inbound tourism as well. As the country continues to develop its tourism infrastructure, accessible air travel will be a key factor in attracting more visitors.

Future Prospects

While the immediate focus was on the Gyumri-Larnaca route, the broader implication of Pashinyan’s statement is a commitment to expanding affordable travel options from Armenia. This could lead to the introduction of more budget routes and increased competition among airlines, ultimately benefiting consumers.

The government’s strategy appears to be geared towards leveraging Armenia’s geographical position and improving its transportation links to integrate more effectively into regional and global networks. Such policies are vital for a country aiming to enhance its economic resilience and offer diverse opportunities to its citizens.
