Yerevan, August 18 – A 39-year-old man has been apprehended in Yerevan in connection with a series of robberies targeting elderly women, where gold chains were forcibly removed from their necks. The suspect, a resident of Malishka village in Vayots Dzor region, was arrested on August 13 at his temporary residence on Nar-Dos Street in the capital.
The Armenian Police reported that in early August, the 112 Operational Management Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs received several alerts regarding robberies. Three elderly women reported having their gold chains snatched in the Bagratunyats Avenue and Yeghishe Tadevosyan Street areas of Yerevan.
Investigation Leads to Suspect
Officers from the Department for Combating Property Crimes of the Criminal Police of Yerevan, in collaboration with their colleagues from the Shengavit Department of the Community Police, acted on operational intelligence. Reliable information indicated that the brazen thefts were committed by a 39-year-old man. Further investigations confirmed that this was the same individual whom criminal police had already suspected for similar past crimes and whose actual place of residence they were trying to ascertain.
The man was arrested at 9:40 AM on August 13 on Nar-Dos Street, where he was temporarily residing, on well-founded suspicion of committing these robberies. He was then transferred to the Criminal Police Department of Yerevan.
Confession Reveals More Robberies
During questioning, the man confessed not only to the robberies committed in August but also to four additional robberies carried out previously. All these incidents also took place on Bagratunyats Avenue in the capital, and in every case, the victims were elderly women.
The compiled documents have been submitted to the Shengavit Administrative District Investigative Department. The 39-year-old man has been remanded in custody and transferred to a penitentiary institution. The preliminary investigation is ongoing.
This incident highlights a concerning trend of criminals targeting vulnerable individuals. Authorities urge residents, especially the elderly, to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police.
