Putin Highlights Russia’s Role as Armenia’s Main Trade Partner
YEREVAN, September 2 – Russian President Vladimir Putin has affirmed Russia’s position as Armenia’s primary trade and economic partner, accounting for approximately 30% of its trade. Speaking at a meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Bishkek, Putin stated that the trade turnover between the two countries reached $2.5 billion in the first half of the current year. He also highlighted Russia’s significant role as an investor in the Armenian economy.
Putin emphasized the ongoing implementation of mutually beneficial projects across various sectors, including industry, agriculture, mining, peaceful atomic energy, transport, and the digital economy. He underscored that Russian companies are among the largest taxpayers in Armenia, contributing to job creation, transferring modern technologies, and bolstering the country’s energy security.
Pashinyan Acknowledges Successes but Points to Underlying Problems
Prime Minister Pashinyan, while acknowledging the successful operations and profitability of many Russian companies in Armenia, also drew attention to a dichotomy within these enterprises. He noted that while some companies are thriving and developing, others are unfortunately unprofitable and stagnant. Pashinyan suggested that this presents a challenge for both Armenia and the Russian Federation, necessitating further consideration and discussion of these nuances.
Decreased Trade Turnover in First Half of 2026
According to data from the Statistical Committee of Armenia, the foreign trade turnover between Armenia and Russia in the first half of 2026 amounted to $2.63 billion, marking a 20.9% decrease compared to the first half of 2025. During the reporting period, exports declined by 4.2% to $1.22 billion, while imports contracted by 30.6% to $1.47 billion. This data suggests a more complex picture than the figures presented by President Putin alone, indicating a need to address the challenges highlighted by Prime Minister Pashinyan.

Despite the recent decline in overall trade volume, the discussions between the two leaders underscore the enduring strategic importance of their economic ties.
