Potential Closure of Russian Military Base in Gyumri Threatens 15,000 Jobs
Gyumri, September 5 – The potential closure of the 102nd Russian military base located in Gyumri could result in the loss of up to 15,000 jobs and a significant reduction in economic impact, stated Hayk Farmanyan, an economist and Member of Parliament from the “Strong Armenia” faction. Farmanyan’s remarks come after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent statement on the possibility of withdrawing the military base from Armenia if the Armenian side deems it no longer necessary.
Economic Impact on Shirak Province
According to various estimates, for every serviceman, 2-3 jobs are created in the economy. Farmanyan highlighted, “With approximately 5,000 servicemen at the 102nd military base, its closure could mean the loss of up to 15,000 jobs or a reduction in economic impact.”
The economist also drew attention to the fact that the military base is situated in the Shirak Province, where, he noted, the poverty rate exceeds 40 percent. “What impact will this have on the economy of Gyumri and the entire Shirak region? I leave the conclusions to the public,” Farmanyan concluded, emphasizing the potential socio-economic consequences for an already vulnerable region.
