‘TEATRON’ Festival to Host ‘FOLIA’ by Mourad Merzouki in Yerevan
Yerevan, September 5 – The international Francophone performing arts festival ‘TEATRON’ is set to take place in Armenia from September 14 to 28. The festival aims to establish Armenia as a platform for artistic encounters, dialogue, and creative exchange, bringing together Armenian artists and creators from the Francophone world.
The ‘TEATRON’ festival will officially commence with the highly anticipated performance of ‘FOLIA’ by world-renowned French choreographer Mourad Merzouki. The show will be presented on September 22 and 23 at 7:30 PM at the G. Sundukyan National Academic Theatre.
A Fusion of Hip-Hop and Baroque Music
‘Folia’ is described as an impressive meeting of hip-hop dance and baroque music. Dancers, accompanied by musicians from the ensemble ‘Le Concert de l’Hostel Dieu’, explore the popular rhythms of Italian tarantellas and folias, which intertwine with electronic sounds. On stage, different eras and artistic languages freely converge. Hip-hop dialogues with contemporary and classical dance, as well as the dances of whirling dervishes, while musicians and a soprano become full participants in the choreography.

With its diversity of artistic forms, ‘Folia’ invites audiences to overcome boundaries and stereotypes. Through the performers’ mastery and the captivating power of music, the performance transports the audience into a visual, sensory, and colorful world.
Mourad Merzouki is known to Armenian audiences for his Armenian-French dance performance ‘The Color of Pomegranate’, dedicated to Parajanov’s 100th anniversary, the ‘Kochar 360’ performance, and last year’s ‘Pixel’ performance, which was showcased in Yerevan as part of the ‘TEATRON’ international Francophone performing arts festival.
The festival’s broader goal is to foster cultural exchange and provide a unique platform for artists to collaborate and showcase their talents. The presence of a choreographer of Merzouki’s caliber underscores the festival’s commitment to presenting world-class artistic productions.
The G.
