Yerevan, August 1 – In an exclusive interview with CivilNet, EU Ambassador to Armenia, Vassilis Maragos, shed light on the significant outcomes of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s recent visit to the region. Following the announcement of the European Union’s new regional connectivity package for the South Caucasus, Ambassador Maragos detailed how a €200 million grant framework is poised to attract approximately €2 billion in public and private investments across the transport, energy, and digital connectivity sectors.

EU’s Growing Investment in Armenia

As emphasized by Maragos, this €2 billion investment package comes in addition to the €2.5 billion already allocated specifically for Armenia under the EU’s ‘Global Gateway’ initiative. Showcasing ongoing local projects, such as green public transport initiatives, including Yerevan’s new bus fleet, the Ambassador underscored how European funding directly impacts daily infrastructure, aligning with broader efforts to enhance regional resilience.

Future Integration and Border Infrastructure

Looking towards future integration, the new financial allocations are strategically aimed at supporting key transport initiatives, thereby strengthening Armenia’s ‘Crossroads of Peace’ project and its integration into the Trans-Caspian Middle Corridor. As efforts to unblock regional borders continue, Ambassador Maragos affirmed the EU’s clear commitment to funding three vital new border crossing points: two along the border with Turkey and one in Yeraskh, towards Nakhchivan.

Impact on Local Infrastructure and Economy

The Ambassador’s statements highlight a significant push for enhanced connectivity and economic development within Armenia and the wider South Caucasus region. The investments are expected to not only improve infrastructure but also foster stronger ties between Armenia and the European Union, facilitating trade, travel, and digital exchange.

EU’s Commitment to Regional Stability

This substantial financial commitment from the EU underscores its dedication to promoting stability, prosperity, and cooperation in the Eastern Partnership countries. The focus on critical infrastructure projects, particularly in transport and energy, is designed to create a more integrated and resilient region, benefiting citizens and businesses alike.
