Gyumri, Shirak Province, Armenia – A 49-year-old resident of Gyumri has been arrested in connection with the murder of a 56-year-old woman, whose body was discovered on July 21, 2024, at her home on Japaridze Street. The victim had been reported missing by relatives since February 2023.
Discovery of the Body and Initial Investigation
The case came to light on July 21, 2024, when a citizen, after returning from the Russian Federation, reported to the operational control center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Police that they had not received any information from their 56-year-old sister, who resided at Japaridze Street in Gyumri, for a long time. Upon returning to Armenia, the citizen broke into the house and discovered their sister’s body.
An operational group dispatched to the scene confirmed the identity of the deceased as the 56-year-old woman who had been sought by the Kumayri police department since February 8, 2023, as a person who had lost contact with relatives. A criminal proceeding was initiated by the Shirak Regional Investigative Department.
Breakthrough in the Case: Arrest and Confession
Through joint operational-investigative measures undertaken by criminal investigators of the Kumayri police department, the Shirak Regional Department, and the Mush and Nairi departments, a 49-year-old man, a resident of Gyumri, was located in one of the houses in Karashamb village, Kotayk Province. He was arrested on suspicion of murder and transferred to the Kumayri department.
During questioning, the man confessed that in late April – early May 2023, while at the 56-year-old woman’s residence, he repeatedly struck her face with his hands during an argument over personal matters. He stated that upon waking the next morning, he found the woman had died. He then took her mobile phones, locked the house and yard doors with a key, and left the scene.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation
The 49-year-old man and the compiled documents have been submitted to the Shirak Regional Investigative Department. The man has been detained and transferred to the detention facility of the Mush department. A preliminary investigation is currently underway.
The incident highlights the importance of thorough investigation in missing persons cases and the dedication of law enforcement to solving crimes, even when significant time has passed since the initial event.
