Four Political Forces to Contest Mughri Municipal Council Elections

Yerevan, September 22 – Four political forces have officially submitted their applications to participate in the upcoming Mughri Municipal Council elections, scheduled for October 25. The competing parties include the Civil Contract, Country to Live, Armenian Prosperous Party, and European Party of Armenia. The elections will determine the composition of the local governing body in Mughri.

According to information confirmed by the Territorial Electoral Commission to Pastinfo, the electoral list for the Civil Contract party will be headed by businessman Sergo Galstyan. Notably, the Civil Contract has presented the largest electoral list, comprising 42 individuals. This indicates a significant effort by the ruling party to secure a strong presence in the local administration.

Key Candidates and Party Lists

The Country to Live and Armenian Prosperous Party have each submitted electoral lists consisting of 10 individuals. Armen Hayrapetyan, a current member of the Mughri Municipal Council, will lead the pre-election list for the Country to Live party. The Armenian Prosperous Party’s list will be topped by Vladik Gevorgyan.

The European Party of Armenia has put forward a 12-member pre-election list, with 61-year-old Arshavir Hovhannisyan at its helm. The diversity in the number of candidates presented by each party suggests varying levels of organizational capacity and strategic approaches to the local elections.

Incumbent Mayor’s Absence and Arrest

A significant development surrounding these elections is the absence of the incumbent Mughri mayor, Khachatur Andreasyan, from all electoral lists. Andreasyan, a member of the Civil Contract party, was arrested on September 10. His arrest is linked to a bribery case, which also involved the head of the Syunik regional subdivision of the Eco-Patrol Service. This event has undoubtedly cast a shadow over the pre-election period and may influence voter sentiment.

The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) data indicates that 8301 people are eligible to vote in Mughri. The outcome of these elections will be crucial for the future governance and development of the Mughri community.

Broader Context of Local Politics

The Mughri elections are taking place amidst a dynamic political landscape in Armenia. Recent reports from Pastinfo highlight several other key events and discussions within the country:

  • Judicial Proceedings: The case regarding the suicide of Artsrun Margaryan has been reopened years later, with a key witness, Hrant Papikyan, forcibly disappeared. This reflects ongoing concerns about judicial integrity and human rights.
  • Economic Developments: The market capitalization of AMD exceeded $1 trillion for the first time, and Google opened pre-orders for its Googlebook laptops starting at $899. These events indicate a growing technology sector and economic shifts.
  • International Relations: The UN is in contact with Pakistan to de-escalate the Iran-US conflict, and the US has called on the Netherlands to withdraw from the International Criminal Court. Discussions have also been held to deepen relations between Armenia and Romania.
  • Social Issues: A 59-year-old teacher in the Ararat region reportedly hit a 14-year-old student during class, and a fatal car accident occurred on the Yerevan-Sevan-Ijevan road. These incidents underscore various social and safety challenges.

The upcoming elections in Mughri will be a significant indicator of local political sentiments and could set a precedent for future local governance in Armenia.
