YEREVAN, August 5 – Two young men have been arrested in Yerevan on suspicion of car thefts and extortion, following an operation by community police officers in the Mashtots district. The arrests took place on the night of July 17, when the suspects, aged 20 and 21, both residents of Yerevan, were apprehended on Mazmanyan Street in their “Tesla” branded car.
Details of the Criminal Scheme Uncovered
The detainees confessed to their actions carried out the previous night. In one instance, the young men stole side mirror glasses from a “Mercedes” parked on Bashinjaghyan Street in the capital. They then affixed a Telegram address to the car. A similar link was also placed on the windshield of a “Range Rover” after they had stolen its foreign license plate. When the car owner contacted them, the suspects demanded 40,000 drams for the return of the license plate.
Legal Proceedings Initiated
The young men and the compiled documents have been submitted to the investigative department, where a criminal case has been initiated. A house arrest measure was applied to the 20-year-old suspect, while the 21-year-old was arrested and transferred to a penitentiary institution.
The circumstances of the case are currently being clarified by the authorities.
