Yerevan, April 22 – The Yerevan City Council is considering a proposal to install a memorial plaque in honor of the prominent Armenian philanthropist Levon Hayrapetyan. The plaque would be placed at 31 Moskovyan Street, Yerevan, to commemorate his life and significant contributions.

Remembering Levon Hayrapetyan: A Life of Philanthropy

Levon Hayrapetyan, born on March 12, 1949, in the village of Vank, Artsakh, was a remarkable figure whose philanthropic endeavors left a lasting impact on his homeland. His charitable work spanned various sectors, particularly focusing on the reconstruction and development of Artsakh.

Key Contributions to Artsakh and Armenia

  • Gandzasar Monastery Complex: Between 2000 and 2002, Hayrapetyan financed the reconstruction of the famous 13th-century Gandzasar monastic complex, a significant cultural and spiritual landmark in Artsakh.
  • Khachen River Reservoir: In 2007, he funded the construction of a 2.5 million cubic meter reservoir on the Khachen River, crucial for the region’s water supply and agriculture.
  • Mass Wedding Ceremony: On October 16, 2008, Hayrapetyan organized an unprecedented mass wedding ceremony for 700 young couples in Stepanakert, Shushi, and Gandzasar. This event, the first of its kind in Artsakh and Armenia, saw 200 couples married at Gandzasar Monastery and another 500 at Ghazanchetsots Church in Shushi.

These initiatives underscore Hayrapetyan’s deep commitment to the welfare and cultural heritage of Artsakh.

City Hall’s Consideration and Public Sentiment

The proposal for the memorial plaque is part of the Yerevan City Council’s agenda, signaling official recognition of Hayrapetyan’s legacy. This move is expected to be welcomed by many who remember his extensive charitable work and dedication to the Armenian people.

Ongoing Discussions and Past Events

The discussion at the City Council reflects a broader public interest in preserving the memory of figures like Hayrapetyan. Past reports from Pastinfo have covered various aspects of his life, including his legal challenges and his passing. His daughter’s death in 2026 and the opening of his will in 2018 were also significant events that garnered public attention.

The installation of a memorial plaque would serve as a permanent reminder of his generosity and enduring impact on the region.
