Yerevan, Armenia – The Kingdom of Spain officially inaugurated its Honorary Consulate in Yerevan in a solemn ceremony. Ashot Parsyan, who also serves as Guatemala’s Honorary Consul in Armenia, has been appointed as the Honorary Consul for Spain.
A Bridge for Economic and Cultural Exchange
In an interview with “Armenpress”, Ashot Parsyan emphasized that the primary mission of the Honorary Consulate extends beyond assisting Spanish citizens in Armenia. Its core objective is to strengthen the economic and cultural bonds between the two nations.
“We will strive to enhance Spain’s recognition in Armenia, acting as an active bridge between the two countries,” stated Parsyan. He highlighted the consulate’s historical roots, noting his role as the founding president of the Spanish Center in Armenia, an institution that has actively fostered connections with the Spanish-speaking world for over two decades.
The newly opened consulate is located in a building that already houses the “Centro Hispano” and a charming Spanish restaurant offering traditional dishes. The premises also feature museum exhibits that provide visitors with insights into Spanish culture, and regular events are organized to promote cultural exchange.
Visa Liberalization and Economic Prospects
Parsyan believes that visa liberalization would significantly contribute to Armenia’s economic development and facilitate freer movement for people, thereby stimulating mutual visits. “Spaniards face no issues when visiting Armenia; we simply wish to elevate Armenia’s recognition by promoting tourism, encouraging more Spanish citizens to visit our country,” he explained.
He further stressed the importance of visa liberalization for Armenian citizens, particularly entrepreneurs, who would then have greater freedom to conduct business in European countries. Parsyan recalled a recent visit by a large delegation of Spanish businesspeople to Armenia, who explored the country’s economic potential and investment opportunities. “The foundation for cooperation has been laid, and everyone will witness the benefits in the near future,” he added.
Strong Bilateral Relations and Shared Values
Ricardo Martinez Vazquez, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Spain to Armenia, expressed his honor in opening an Honorary Consulate in a country rich in spirit, with a millennial history and culture. “Relations between Armenia and Spain are strong. We share many commonalities, values, and principles. We prioritize culture and education to inspire our relations and the future of our planet in coexistence, respect, and peace,” the Ambassador remarked.
Ambassador Vazquez paid special tribute to Ashot Parsyan, acknowledging his long-standing efforts in building a bridge between Armenia and Spain, strengthening cultural, linguistic, human, and social ties. He highlighted Parsyan’s dedication to the Spanish Center, established 22 years ago, where children could learn Spanish free of charge. “His humble initiative later contributed to the development of international relations,” the Ambassador noted.
According to the diplomat, the entire network of international relations is built through such real, small steps. He assessed that Parsyan’s work transcended a mere educational endeavor, evolving into a cultural bridge that opened the Spanish language and culture to many Armenians.
Direct Flights and Future Prospects
Ambassador Vazquez also announced exciting news for travelers: “Many citizens of the Republic of Armenia now wish to visit Spain. This summer, we will have a new direct flight connection between Yerevan and Alicante. So, please, get your tickets and start flying to Spain. But first, come here to learn a little Spanish. And I am confident that this will contribute to strengthening long-term relations between Armenia and Spain.”
The opening of the Honorary Consulate marks a significant step in deepening the ties between Armenia and Spain, promising enhanced cooperation in various sectors and fostering greater mutual understanding.
